Today is another holiday in Bali, that is why Kabonfootprint is heading to the village for family ceremony. Along the streets in Bali we can see almost everybody is wearing theirs sarong and kebaya. It’s really a celebration here in Bali a place that Kabon love very much.

Galungan ceremony is a very special holiday for the Balinese. It occurs every 210 days and is a 10 days ceremony. The last day is called Kuningan day. The meaning of Galungan is when Dharma (Goodness) is winning. Galungan marks the begin of the most important Hindu religious ceremony in Bali. During the Galungan period, the ancestors of the family descend to their home shrines. Offerings and prayers must be made for them.
Galungan always falls on a Wednesday, but most of Balinese begin their holiday one day before. This day is known as the Penampahan Galungan. During this day families are busy preparing offerings and cooking for the next day. The women of the house will be busy to create offerings made from young coconut leaves. The men of the house usually wake up to join others from the village to slaughter a pig and make a tasteful dishes. Babi guling and lawar is the main menu for this celebration and Kabonfootprint really enjoy this unique meal. I will tell you more about this great dish sometimes later.
The famous decoration at the entrance to the family compound is called Penjor. By late Tuesday afternoon all over Bali the visitor can see these decorative poles creating a very festive atmosphere in the street. The day after Galungan is a time for a holiday, this day is known as Manis Galungan. Everyone is still seen to be in their holiday mood as they take to the streets to enjoy the festive spirit that Galungan brings to Bali.
Many shops, restaurants and business in Bali will be closed for some days. There’s a sense of feeling for Balinese people that perhaps it might feel like christmas in western world. So enjoy the holiday, have some rest and regards to the family ![]()
